Birthday Thoughts and New Beginnings

Today is my birthday and I am not usually very sentimental about such things.  Birthdays are just another day, right?  Not this time.  This time I’m struck by how much my life has changed in the past year and how much I have to be grateful for.  So many times people get to my age (and no, you will just have to guess what it is) and get pretty settled and comfortable in life.  Comfortable is boring!  Once you think you have it all figured out, it is time for new goals and new beginnings.  This is the year I finally quit that job that was becoming more and more painful and started working for myself, my son started college, and my house is up for sale.  I think that’s enough for one year!

So, on this birthday of mine, I want to call out some of the new people that have earned star bookings in this show I call my life:

  • The wonderful, sometimes wacky, wild wenches that make up the pirate Krewe of Charlotte de Berry: I joined this Krewe at the end of last season for some fun, but I found so much more.  Yes, we love to dress up like pirates and throw beads from the float during parades, but there is a strong spirit of giving as well.  You see the true spirit of this krewe in all they do, from the fireman’s auction this weekend to benefit Building Homes for Heroes, cooking dinner for Ronald MacDonald House, to all the mini-charities we do month after month.
  • My husband’s doctors and therapists:  My husband has had chronic pain, at times seriously debilitating pain, for more than a decade.  It’s still around, but so much better.  All the medications are gone, he’s able to move and do and laugh again.  This is the year he gets to start over and be himself again, rather than someone consumed by pain.  He’s improved so much that they are planning to interview us for a special on WEDU!
  • All the phenomenal people I’ve met in the Tampa Bay business community and beyond, that are willing to share their knowledge, experiences and ideas with me.  I’ve found so much support from groups like The Winner’s Circle and The Wealth Building Annex‘s e-Marketing group.
  • New relationships with long-lost friends – Through Facebook and LinkedIn, I’ve reconnected with friends from my past that I’d totally lost track of.  We are all different people now, so it’s like forming a new friendship all over again.

It is so easy to get comfortable, to just settle for what you have right now.  But it’s like the old saying, if you’re not growing, you’re dying.  You only get to live this life of ours one time, so challenge yourself to move out of your comfort zone just a little bit and see how much fun you can have!
